day seventy: lego minifig storage :)

the solution for storing lego minifigs and
as a bonus they look fantastic on the wall!
day seventy and i know four little peeps that love LEGO ... and at some stage they take over the dresser and everything that was on the dresser goes on the floor.  its time to take some pinterest action and find a new storage solution for these little lego people :)

a bunch of eager volunteers loitering about!
pinned to my kids bedroom board is this wonderful idea for lego minifigs in the form of some wall art from felix on mi muller.  how cool is this, we needed a more movable option given i have my house on the market and my sister is in singapore and who knows where next!  so it was off to ikea for some frames to suit each child's minifig collection (the frames at ikea are SO cheap i got some for ben and polly so i can do their's when we return!)  it was then off to the local lego store for a heap of 2 x 2 lego blocks, and then to the stationers for coloured backing paper.

materials organised
today i made the frames for isla and sam's minifigs.  isla's one we decided to have a non-structured approach with white backing paper and for sam's green backing paper to match his room and a structured approach to the blocks.  the actual blocks are then super glued to the glass and you are good to go :)

outcome:  LOVE THESE SO MUCH! i love that they are a hangable storage solution, they look fantastic in their rooms as art, but the minifigs are SO easy to put off and on even for our littliest peep when they want to play with them ... this may even be a new favourite pinterest creation, the photo's just don't do it justice :)
structured version - green background added to match the boys room

this picture shows the effect brilliantly

unstructured version - the finished article looks
really cool!
minifigs can be easily removed/replaced to
refresh the wall art
a huge thanks to felix on mi muller for this fantastic idea, i am absolutely certain whether you attach them straight to the wall or do the frame option you will love this way of storing lego minifigs!

Lego people!
I have mine in a seethrough mirrored printers tray. I tried to take some photos last night but the flash keeps reflecing against the mirror, so it's hard to see them.

I would love to know the spacing on these. I bought the IKEA frames today and now it's just a matter of lining everything up. Is the glass durable? That's my other worry with the figures coming off - what about adhesive?

hello fullers! the spacing for this one is random :) we attached each of the white bricks to a lego minifig and then scattered them about until the spacing works. for ben's one, we did his lined and the bottom of each brick is 3" away from the bottom of the next brick going vertically. horizontally the start of each brick is 1 3/4" away from the start of the next brick. we allowed for a bit of extra room between them for the minifig's bits (swords, tennis rackets, boom boxes etc!). as for adhesive we used a glass araldite and then made sure the kids didn't put any lego minifigs on for a WEEK! that week make or breaks the bond, if you can stop them from using it for a week the bond is super strong and doesn't break :) none of ben's have fallen off and there is a constant change of minifigs, this has been one of my favourite creations as it works so well for storage and decor in ben and polly's room ... sam and isla still have there's and my sister still loves them too :)

So glad someone asked about the adhesive as I have done this as well only with KrazyGlue, Gorilla Glue, and Titeloc super glues and because the lego and the glass are both smooth, we just look at the lego minifigs and they fall off, sending their accessories flying across the room. Love this idea, just thought it was a bust! Going to try the new adhesive before I scrap it! **fingers crossed**

hi tina, stick with it ... just remember use a glass araldite and don't let anyone near it for a week because that will be the key to your success :) ours are still going strong june, 2012! if you want to go one step further sand the back of the lego brick a little to get the gloss off it ... i haven't tried this but if you are having trouble this might also help you :)

I love this idea. Any suggestions on what to use as an adhesive for us Americans? The stuff you mentioned is not for sale here.

LOVE this! And so much more practical than our current storage system, the floor. Plan to make one very soon!

Love this idea, so much simpler than what I started. I bought the deep frames in Ikea and then used foam board to create 'shelves inside' the frame, then used 'blu-tac' to stand them up. It was such a hassle and the frames only come in small sizes that fit around 6 figures. I am gonna do something else with those, go back and get more of the kid friendly NYTTJA frames and glue the blocks on the front. Thanks!

Great idea! It would definitely make it easier to find individual minifigures when building. (I'd probably have to buy the 2x2 pieces because I don't think my son would part with any of his if I was going to glue them to something...lol)

Have you ever had a problem with the white blocks falling off the glass
